Spring Flowers are the BEST Flowers
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, SPRING FLOWERS ARE MY FAVORITE! They come at a time of the year where color is so needed to help boost everyone’s moods. Some of the most beautiful and intricate flowers come out of the coldest and wettest weeks of the year. Take these beautiful blue and white anemones for instance, they were pre-sprouted back in week 2 (January), and then transplanted out in March. They survived overnight temperatures down into the teens with some help from the hoophouse and additional frost cloth. I’m happy to report they have begun blooming and are such a welcome sight!
What flowers are up next?
Tulips are one of the most classic spring flowers everyone thinks of, and for good reason. They come in such a wide variety of shapes and colors and are constantly evolving thanks to the Dutch breeders and hybridizers. Here on the farm we grow the varieties that are best known for being cut flowers (long stems and a good vase life).
The parrot tulips have quickly become my favorites. With their frilly petals and watercolored appearance, they put on a constant show for the viewer. As the parrot tulips continue to open they become even richer in color and are actually really big blooms. Sometimes measuring 5-6″ across.
Ranunculus are another really interesting flower to grow. They start from the most unassuming spider shaped corms, go through their presprouting process, and turn into some really incredible spring flowers. On the farm we grown the French ranunculus varieties Amandine and La Belle. Ranunculus can range from the softest most subtle tones to some really bright and cheery colors. Below is an Amandine Rose ranunculus bud ready to bloom.
